Pinole Library Native Plant Garden
The Pinole Library Native Plant Garden was established by FOPCW in 2003. Recognizing the need for a major overhaul, we organized two workdays in 2019 and the garden continues to grow with the leadership of local Earth Team interns.
In 2023-24, the CC Resource Conservation District received funds from a mitigation project which they proposed to use to expand the Library Native Plant Garden. The actual site is located a few feet from the garden. The project included ripping out invasive English Ivy, sheet mulching and planting natives all the way down to the creek. The RCD, volunteers, and Earth Team all participated in the effort. As of Fall 2024, many of the plants have survived the difficult summer and are preparing for the rainy season!
We have plans to expand the garden to increase habitat, engage community members and support riparian restoration in 2024-2025. A major point of interest is the unhoused community which currently lives behind the library. It is possible that these folks might become official Creek Stewards in the near future.
